Paul Stirling ruled out of Ireland’s remaining ODIs against Namibia

Ireland captain Paul Stirling has been ruled out of the final two matches of the five-game ODI series against Namibia after fracturing the ring finger on his left hand while fielding in the third match.

The injury occurred during the 15th over, when Stirling was positioned at short cover. He dived forward in an attempt to take a low catch from a powerful cut by Namibia batter Jan Frylinck, but the ball struck his fingertip and caused the fracture.

Stirling was unable to bat in Ireland’s innings, and a hospital assessment later that evening confirmed the extent of the injury. The 35-year-old will now return home to begin his recovery and rehabilitation, leaving Ireland without their captain for the closing fixtures in Windhoek.

Wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker will take over as Ireland captain for the fourth and fifth ODIs. Tim Tector has been called into the squad as Stirling’s replacement for the rest of the tour.

Tector is yet to make his ODI debut, but has already played eight Twenty20 Internationals for Ireland. He also produced a strong showing in the European T20 Premier League last month, adding to his recent experience in the shorter formats.

Stirling’s absence is a considerable blow to Ireland, given the opening batter’s experience and leadership. It also gives Tector an opportunity to press his case for a more regular place in the international setup, while Tucker faces the immediate challenge of leading the team through the final two games.

Namibia moved 2-1 ahead in the series with a 63-run victory in the third ODI. Ireland had won the opening match by 55 runs before Namibia levelled the contest with a 31-run win in the second game.

The fourth ODI is scheduled for October 30 in Windhoek, with the series concluding at the same venue on November 1. Ireland will now attempt to regroup without Stirling and finish the tour strongly against a Namibia side that has won the past two matches.
