Jan Frylinck’s century helped Namibia move 2-1 ahead in their five-match one-day international series against Ireland, with the hosts winning the third match by 63 runs in Windhoek on Tuesday.
Frylinck made 126 as Namibia posted 316-7 from their 50 overs after choosing to bat first. Ireland were dismissed for 253 in 44.5 overs, despite a determined 106 from Curtis Campher, leaving them unable to complete a chase that had become increasingly difficult after a poor start.
Ireland captain Paul Stirling was unable to bat after injuring a finger while fielding during Namibia’s innings. His absence further weakened the visitors’ pursuit after they slipped to 56-4.
Namibia also lost an early wicket when opener Louren Steenkamp was caught for 13, with the score on 33. Their position became less secure at 81-2 when Malan Kruger departed for 42, but Frylinck and captain Gerhard Erasmus then rebuilt the innings with a third-wicket stand worth 101.
Frylinck provided the main impetus, while Erasmus contributed 54 before Namibia accelerated towards a formidable total. Alex Volschenk added 36, and Kruger’s earlier contribution helped the hosts maintain momentum. Andy McBrine and Campher were Ireland’s most successful bowlers, taking two wickets each, although Campher conceded 68 runs and McBrine 53.
Ireland’s reply appeared in serious trouble before Campher gave them hope. He struck 106 from 86 balls and attempted to keep the chase alive as wickets continued to fall around him. Namibia’s bowlers, however, maintained regular pressure and prevented Ireland from building another substantial partnership.
Bernard Scholtz, Ruben Trumpelmann and Jack Brassell each claimed two wickets for Namibia. Ireland were eventually bowled out with 31 balls remaining, well short of their target.
The result follows Namibia’s victory in the previous meeting, when Gerhard Erasmus made an unbeaten 156 to help his side level the series at 1-1. Ireland had won the opening match, but now trail for the first time in the contest.
The teams will meet again on Friday and Sunday, with the remaining matches forming part of Ireland’s preparations for next year’s World Cup qualifiers.
